Dogs abandoned during Houston’s January freeze settle into their forever home

Posted on July 27, 2024 by Indah

HOUSTON – It was an ending that Amanda Mares could only dream of when she found two shivering dogs in the cold during January’s harsh freeze.

Mares had heard frantic barking in a wooded area next to her family’s business and discovered sisters Hazel and Louise tied to a tree, with no shelter, food, or water.

She begged their owner to take the dogs inside during the freeze, but he told her he was going to dump them instead.

Mares then took the two girls into her small townhouse in northwest Houston, and the community rallied to get the girls taken care of. Memorial Information Trading helped Mares get supplies through their Facebook group, and the organization SAVE Rescue spayed them for free.

But the two boxers, pit bull and husky mixes really needed a yard, and that’s when Mares turned to KPRC 2 for help. We published her story, and less than a week later the article found its way to their new owner in Brazoria County.

Mares took the girls on their freedom ride, and they officially moved into their new home March 24.

Their new owner is a bit media shy, but says that the girls’ new home sits on 40 acres! She also says, quote, “They are going to be spoiled rotten.”

Mares said the girls took off running immediately around their new property, which brought tears of joy to her heart.

“I knew without a doubt that what we had done was one of the greatest things I’ve done.”

It was a bittersweet goodbye, but Mares is grateful that this emotional journey had a happy ending.

“I know for a fact we never would have found their new owner had it not been for the story that KPRC 2 told about them.”

We wish Hazel and Louise the best of luck in their new home!
