(KMIZ) Animal shelters and rescues around the country have seen an uptick in pet owners giving up their animals because of the pandemic and inflation. The Spay Neuter Project in Columbia has seen an increase in vaccine and surgery requests, performing 104 surgeries in four days the first week of August. The clinic is on target to complete more than 430 surgeries this month, according to the clinic. The Bixby Animal Clinic is partnering with Friends of Long Beach Animals to offer free microchipping for cats and dogs ahead of the Fourth of July holiday. Pet owners can make an appointment or drop by the clinic for free microchipping until July 3. The collaboration aims to combat overpopulation in the Khayelitsha township, which has an estimated 300 000 companion animals. According to the organisations, Dr Roos from EnviroVet CVC approached the National Sterilization Project (NSP) and Dancers Love Dogs to secure funding for the project.
